St. Augustine is commonly accepted as the oldest, continuously occupied
non-Native American settlement in the United States.
In search of the legendary Fountain of Youth, the area now known as St. Augustine was first founded by Ponce de Leon in 1513 who took possession of the area for Spain and was later colonized by Pedro Menendez de Aviles on order of King Phillip II. Pedro arrived on the Feast Day of St. Augustine and so named the landing sight after the saint. St. Augustine has long served as a military outpost, both for the Spanish as well as for the English who occupied the area between 1763 to 1783 before trading it back to Spain. St. Augustine became an American territory in 1821 and again served as a military outpost during the Second Seminole War. During a strong push in the late 1800's by developer Henry Flagler, St. Augustine became a resort destination filled with plush hotels and leisure activities, many of which still draw visitors today. |
