What is now San Francisco was founded by early Spanish settlers as the Presido, an early military post at the northern end of the San Francisco peninsula in 1776. The Mexican settlement, Yerba Buena, was christened in 1847 but was later renamed San Francisco in 1847 after fighting broke out between the U.S. and Mexico. After Mexico was forced to release control of the area known as California the city was officially incorporated in 1850. San Francisco experienced a phenomenal growth surge in 1849 after gold was discovered nearby. The "Forty-niners" arrived by the thousands, all with dreams of becoming rich. After the rush, many of these adventurers stayed and became farmers and shopkeepers. |
