Historical
Carpenter's Hall - Meeting place of
the First Continental Congress in 1774. The delegates chairs are still
housed there. The building is a perfect example of Georgian
architecture, and there are exhibits showing the process of the
building's construction. Admission is free.
Christ Church--The church that
formalized the separation of the colonists from the Church of England.
The parish was formed in 1695, but the church wasn't built until 1727.
Benjamin was a major influence in raising funds for the steeple and
tower.
Edgar Allan Poe House - Poe lived at this address for during which
time he wrote much of the work he would become famous for including
The Black Cat and The Fall of the House of Usher. It is
believed that he began The Raven here, and finished it when he
moved to New York.
Elfreth's Alley--Considered the
nation's oldest residential street. Built in the early 1700s by Jeremiah
Elfreth, this street has been continuously inhabited by residents. There
is a museum in one of the houses, and you can take tours of one of the
other houses. |
