New York was first mapped by Henry Hudson, who discovered Manhattan on
September 11th, 1609. The Dutch soon established New Amsterdam which was
granted self-government in 1652. However, just 12 years later, the British
seized the city and renamed it New York, after the English Duke of York. In 1925, New York had become the most populous city in the world, surpassing London and her century-old claim to that title. Though struck thoroughly during the Great Depression, New York emerged from World War II as the leading city in the world, with Wall Street as the world's economic superpower. While Hollywood may lead the film industry, New York positively leads the American theatre industry. Once called the melting pot for it's many ethnic constituents, New York's variety of attractions, museums and restaurants still make it the cultural capitol of the world. |
