Martha's Vineyard

Located 7 miles off of the Massachusetts coast, and 3-1/2 miles from Cape Cod, this 87 square mile island can only be reached by air or ocean. You can bring a car by ferry, but you have to get a permit in advance, and you really don’t need it. Martha’s Vineyard is known as the summer vacation for the wealthy. Families vacationing there go back generations, back to the 1800s when the island gained notoriety due to its prominence in the whaling industry. Today it is the place to go for high-profile residents, professionals, political and movie stars.

The island is made up of 6 towns: Tisbury, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah. Each town has its own personality and traditions. The island is home to about 15,000 year-round residents, but this number swells to over 100,000 in the summer. An additional 25,000 or so come on a short-term basis as well. The island has several conservation and tourism councils to make sure that all of the natural features of the island aren’t impacted by all of the visitors.
