Audubon House and Tropical Gardens - Filled with
18th and 19th century furnishings, pottery and art inside and
tropical gardens featuring exotic native plants outside. This was the home
of John James Audubon while painting the Florida Keys wildlife in 1832. Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum - Purchased as a
writer's retreat by Ernest Hemingway in 1931, this Spanish colonial-style
mansion surrounded by tropical gardens was the home and inspiration for
many of the infamous writer's novels. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park - Built
during 1845-1866 this military outpost was part of Florida's coastal
defense system. Now home to one of the largest collections of Civil War
armaments, it is a popular spot for picnicking, swimming, fishing and
other recreational activities. Key West Aquarium - An open-air aquarium invites
visitors to interact with marine life in their 'touch tank'. Daily shark
and turtle feedings take place daily. Key West Lighthouse Museum - Filled with nostalgia
and history, this museum showcases exhibits and historical items. An
88-step staircase takes you to the top of this 1847 original lighthouse. Little White House Museum - Restored to its
beautiful 1948 grandeur, this home was a favorite retreat for notable U.S.
Presidents such as Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy. Mel Fisher Maritime Museum - Displays artifacts
from the wreckage of two Spanish galleons and showcases the technology of
underwater archeology. Wreckers' Museum/Oldest House - The 1829 house is
said to be the oldest in South Florida. Filled with American nautical
antiques and furnishings but one of the real highlights in the unique
construction and architecture. |
