A French colony in the Jacksonville area was originally settled in 1564,
only to be destroyed by the Spanish forces in St. Augustine a year later.
Nothing remains of Fort de la Caroline, and St. Augustine, not
Jacksonville, is now recognized as the nation’s oldest city. When more European settlers came, Jacksonville was named Cowford because the river was narrow there, allowing cattlemen to ford, or herd, the cattle across the St. Johns River. Fortunately for all of us, it was renamed in 1822 after the first territorial governor and future president, Andrew Jackson. Affectionately referred to as JAX by residents, Jacksonville is geographically the largest city in the 48 contiguous states. It also happens to have the 14th largest population. Bustling and simply vibrant with activity, Jacksonville is sure to captivate each visitor’s heart from the time they first spot the beautiful St. Johns River. |
