Reminiscent of Venice, Italy, much of Fort Lauderdale's busy downtown
office buildings, nightspots, beaches, tourist attractions, galleries and
boutiques are connected by the famous Intracoastal Waterway and canals. Originally settled in 1838 by Major William Lauderdale, the city didn't see much growth until the early 1900's when it became known as a tourist paradise and started filling with hotels, resorts, and shopping. Today, Fort Lauderdale's miles of beaches, year-round tropical climate, and luxurious shopping opportunities draw millions of visitors each year. Also, Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale's state-of-the-art cruise terminal, sees tourists off to exotic destinations in the Caribbean, South America, and even across to Europe. |
