Chicago, IL

Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable, who arrived in the 1770s, founded the area of Chicago's first trading post. And in 1803, the United States Army built Fort Dearborn (which was destroyed in 1812 in the Fort Dearborn Massacre).

After skirmishes with the native Indians, the Indians eventually ceded the land to the United States in 1816. In 1833, the city of Chicago was organized with a population of a mere 350 people, however, in 7 years it had grown to nearly 4,000.

Known as the "Windy City," Chicago is the 3rd most populous city in the United States, and one of the most influential as well.

Although it is the financial, economic and cultural capital of the Midwest, it's also recognized a major transportation, business and architectural center in the nation.
