In February of 1864, eight men aboard the confederate submarine the Hunley
succeeded in destroying the U.S.S. Housatonic; but after their victory,
the Hunley and crew were never seen again - until August of 2000 when the
submarine
and remains of the crew were excavated from the Charleston Harbor. The
submarine is now under preservation treatments but is accessible for
viewing. There are exhibits depicting the Hunley's history and tours are
also available.
