Originally named Charles Towne in honor of Britain's King Charles II, the
city was founded in 1670 on the marshy banks of Albemarle Point then moved
to it's present location ten years later. Although reluctantly drawn into the Revolutionary War, Charles Towne gave the colonies their first decisive victory. After the war, the city changed it's name to Charleston. Charleston then became known as a hub of commerce and Southern gentility, as well as for it's easy-going and elegant nature. Today, from Charleston's carefully tended gardens to it's quiet cobblestone lanes lined with antebellum houses Charleston is sure to capture visitor's hearts with each visit. |
