Atlanta started with humble beginnings, as a railroad surveyor's stake in a clearing, to grow into the Metropolitan Business Center of the South. However, even though the city is now crisscrossed with expressways teeming with urbanites rushing to get to work in one of the towering skyscrapers, the city has never quite lost the old charm of the south. As the home to Coca-Cola since 1886, and the headquarters for the media giant CNN on Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta has firmly grounded itself as a center for large businesses and continues to draw Fortune 1000 companies. Atlanta is also the national headquarters for the United Parcel Service, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Cancer Society as well as the Southeastern headquarters for the U.S. Public Health Service. A wide range of commodities are made here by some 3700 manufacturers, including aircraft, automobiles, chemicals, food, furniture, paper, textiles, iron & steel, and is quickly becoming a center for the technological industry as well. |
