Yosemite National Park |

|
Yosemite National Park is not the first park incorporated into the National Park Service, but it is one of the most popular, thanks to John Muir’s interest in it and developing others like it. In addition to the park’s inclusion in the National Park Service, it has been designated as almost 95% wilderness making it highly protected. This wilderness area consists primarily of majestic granite cliffs, numerous waterfalls and streams, and groves of giant sequoias. The park covers 1,189 square miles, but only about 7 square miles (Yosemite Valley) are frequented by visitors, due to the inhospitable weather conditions in the rest of the park. Snow covers most of the rest of the region from late fall to late spring. Approximately 3-1/2 million visitors visit Yosemite Valley each year. |
