Parks & Recreation Camelback Mountain—This mountain got its name because it looks like a camel’s hump. It is full of red cliffs and many hiking areas. The cliffs rise 200ft vertical in some locations luring lots of rock climbers to the area. In addition, there are 4 trailheads to choose from. Two are easy and two are strenuous, and are only recommended to experienced hikers. The trailheads are open from sunrise to sunset.
Camelback Mountain Desert Botanical Garden—You cannot appreciate the desert landscape until you have visited this place. The 50 acre complex features over 139 rare and endangered plant species. With over 63 years of environmental awareness under their belt, they are committed to the research, education and conservation of desert plants.
Desert Botanical Garden Japanese Friendship Garden (RO HO EN)—This charming little garden is every bit as tranquil as its name implies. The 3-1/2 acre garden is home to a 12ft waterfall, over 50 varieties of plants, a pond with over 300 koi, and a tea house.
Japanese Friendship Garden Tonto National Forest—A forest in Arizona? Yep. And it’s a big one too. There are lots of hiking trails under the shade of the trees, and over 16,000 acres of lakes. There are many areas for swimming, boating, fishing and horseback riding. You can even go tubing on the Salt River.
