Museums Arizona Historical Society-Museum at Papago Park—This small museum focuses on the more recent history of central Arizona. There are exhibits on WWII’s impact on the area, water conservation, and how the cities have changed since that war.
Arizona Historical Society Heard Museum—If you come to the Southwest, you expect to see evidence of Indians, and this museum is dedicated to just that. It was opened in 1929 by Dwight & Maie Heard who wanted to share their private collection of Native American artifacts with the public. That collection has grown in recent to over 40,000 pieces, including many from around the country.
Heard Museum Phoenix Art Museum—Opened in 1959 this museum has come a long way in such a few short years. There are works of art by artists such as Picasso and Monet, fashion design, and miniature room designs called the Thorne Rooms. This makes a great place to take the family on a hot day. It is always cool inside and they have a café where you can get a bite to eat and Interactive ArtWorks Gallery for the kids.
Phoenix Art Museum Phoenix Museum of History—No visit to Phoenix would be complete without a trip here. Learn how Phoenix got its name. Learn all about the original inhabitants—the Hohokam, and about the Salt River Valley. You can even visit a replica of an old-fashioned general store. They are closed on Sunday and Mondays.
Phoenix Museum of History Pueblo Grand Museum and Archeological Park—This museum is located at the site of a 1500 year old Hohokam village ruin. You can learn all about how the Hohokam were able to cultivate the Salt River Valley for farming, and how their ways impact life in Phoenix today. There are even full size replicas of their houses. You can also learn about archaeology and how to dig for clues at sites.
