Phoenix was founded in 1868 by Jack Swilling, a Confederate soldier who had come out west hoping to get rich. He saw the Salt River Valley as a place that could be farmed, due in large part to the canal routes by the Hohokam Indians who had created them and cultivated the land hundreds of years before. The city was incorporated in 1881 and named Phoenix to depict how the city would rise to something great out of the ashes of what was left behind by the Hohokam. The city is the capital of Arizona and is the largest state capital in the United States by population. It is not overly congested though because it spreads out so far. Many other popular cities make up the greater metropolitan area including: Scottsdale, Glendale, Mesa and Tempe. Located in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix is known for being dry and hot. In the summer it is not unusual for temperatures to get up to the 100s and in the winter it rarely goes below 40. The city has embraced Mother Nature, and is working on ways to conserve water, and use the natural plant-life to enhance the environment rather than try to suppress it. Phoenix may be in the desert, but you see mountains everywhere you look. Phoenix has been attracting visitors since the 1930s who come for the weather, but end up staying. There are numerous corporations establishing headquarters here, including lots of computer and internet related companies. What once used to be a retirement mecca has become a contemporary city and tourism favorite. |
