Outer Banks, NC

Located along the coast of North Carolina, this 200 mile long swath of barrier islands is separated from the Atlantic Ocean and North Carolina by the Intracoastal Waterway. The Outer Banks actually of a series of islands: Bodie, Roanoke, Hatteras and Oracoke. Much of Hatteras is protected land designated as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. It was the first to be named a National Seashore in the nation.

The Outer Banks is also the place where the Wright Brothers took off on their first powered flight in 1903, and the place where the longest outdoor drama is held: The Lost Colony. This drama depicts the story of the first English colonists who disappeared without a trace here in 1587.

The Outer Banks is a popular tourist destination due to the miles upon miles of sandy beaches and temperate climate. It is prone to hurricanes though because it juts so far out into the Atlantic.  It is very windy here so there are a lot of sports that you can do here like hang gliding and kiteboarding. While you won’t find the white sands and turquoise waters of the Caribbean or Bahamas, you will find it a fun place for your family to spend a relaxing summer vacation.
