Nestled in Southern California between the Pacific Ocean
and the San Gabriel Mountains lies the nations 2nd largest city—Los
Angeles, home to 9 million people and most of the country’s movie and
television studios.
Originally founded by the Spanish, Los Angeles was handed over to the
Mexicans in the late 1800’s who kept the land primarily for agricultural
purposes. Mexico was pretty hands-off about the territory, and was
easily overthrown during the Mexican War in 1846.
Los Angeles exploded during the Gold Rush Era, but went through much
upheaval afterwards, and didn’t really start to take shape until the
20th century when the motion picture businesses moved to town. The city
attracted studios and celebrities alike with its sunny weather,
temperate climate, and diverse scenery.
The past few decades have seen Los Angeles plagued with illegal
immigration, racial problems and smog, to name a few; but Angelinos are
loyal group, and the city’s intrigue continues to draw hosts of new
residents every year. |
